Happy National Poetry Month!

White sign with "National Poetry Month" in bold black text, set outdoors with blurred trees in the background, creating a calm mood.

Every April, writers, readers, teachers, and poetry lovers celebrate the art of poetry. The recognition of National Poetry Month started in 1996, making this year the 30th Anniversary of NaPoMo.

It’s a great excuse to read more poems, discover new poets, and make a little more room for your own writing.

To help you get started, I created a 30-day poetry prompt calendar for the month of April.

Some prompts connect to previous posts with more detailed instructions, while others are quick starters you can use on their own get get something on the page.

You can follow the calendar day by day, skip around, or choose the prompts that catch your attention. There’s no wrong way to use it. The goal is simply to keep returning to the page and crafting new material.

And while this calendar was made to celebrate National Poetry Month, you don’t have to put it away when April ends, or even get started during NaPoMo. These prompts can be used any time you want a way into a poem.
